Jackson Developmental Center has two sites, offering a variety of center-based classes which service children with a wide range of developmental needs.
Types of Classes
Jackson understands that children develop at a different pace, and require varied levels of support. Some children may benefit from a highly structured setting with individualized attention and an intense visual program in order to learn. Others benefit from being in a setting similar to a general education setting while receiving additional support. It is our goal to give each child the support required in the Least Restrictive Setting, slowly advancing them towards independence.

Programs and Curriculums Used in the Classrooms
In each of our classrooms, the development of cognitive, social and language skills are facilitated through naturalistic activities and opportunities for exploration and play. Children are exposed to a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and experiences that meet NYS Educational Standards as they work towards meeting their educational and IEP goals. Child-directed tasks are facilitated by the teachers to promote independent discovery, problem solving skills and the ability to make choices. It is our aim to provide children with the love and desire to learn and the confidence necessary to try new tasks, both integral preparations for their future of learning ahead of them.
The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool is implemented in each classroom, as teachers employ a variety of child-directed and teacher-directed activities around themes that are meaningful to the children. Activities are exciting and appropriate for young children, encouraging creativity and learning in the core areas of literacy, math, science and social studies.

How are families involved in their child’s education?
Jackson Developmental Center upholds an open door policy, where families are always welcome at any time. Teachers and related service providers maintain ongoing communication with parents regarding their child’s progress and/or any issues or concerns relating to his/her development. In return,Jackson encourages families to do the same, informing teachers of progress noted (so we can join in applause!) or to relay any issues/changes in the child’s routine.
Family Education Workshops are offered frequently on a variety of current topics in child development. Help parents help children In addition, Jackson offers an 8 part series Nutrition Workshop where participants can receive certification accredited by Cornell University.
Our social work department works closely with parents and offers Parent Consultation whenever any specific issues and questions relating to their child arises. Changes which occur in children’s lives (such as a new baby, family members moving in/out of the house) can have a deep impact on a child and can affect his/her behavior. Social workers are available to offer strategies and insight to help families help their child address his/her feelings and adapt to the situation.
